1.What Is Berberine? It’s the Same as Huang Lian Su
Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from plants like Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian), Phellodendron, and Berberis. Many people first hear about it from taking Huang Lian Su for diarrhea. But berberine does a lot more than just stop loose stools.
In the past twenty years or so, modern research has rediscovered berberine. A ton of studies show that it activates AMPK (a “master switch” for energy metabolism), which affects blood sugar, blood lipids, weight, and more. That’s why some people call it “plant-based metformin.”
In dietary supplements, berberine is mainly used for: helping maintain normal blood sugar (especially for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes), regulating blood lipids (lowering cholesterol and triglycerides), supporting weight management, and improving gut health.
Compared to many other botanicals, berberine has a fair amount of human research and the effects are fairly clear. It’s not a drug and can‘t replace diabetes or cholesterol meds, but as a supportive measure, a lot of people find it helpful.

2.How Does It Work?
Berberine’s mechanism isn‘t simple, but the core is AMPK activation.
AMPK is a cellular energy sensor. When activated, cells switch from “storage mode” to “energy-burning mode.” So berberine’s effects include:
Improves insulin sensitivity – Cells use blood sugar more effectively, lowering fasting and post-meal blood sugar.
Reduces liver glucose production – Inhibits gluconeogenesis in the liver, so less glucose is released into the blood.
Regulates blood lipids – Lowers total cholesterol, LDL (“bad” cholesterol), and triglycerides, with a mild increase in HDL.
Promotes fat breakdown – Reduces fat synthesis and increases fat burning.
Modulates gut bacteria – Improves gut environment, which also helps with some intestinal issues and diarrhea.
Let’s be honest: Berberine‘s effects are stronger than most plant ingredients, but still gentler than prescription drugs. Some clinical studies show that 500 mg, 2–3 times a day, can lower fasting blood sugar by 10–20% – similar to a low dose of metformin. But not everyone responds the same way, and it takes a few weeks to kick in.
3.What to Look for When Buying Berberine Powder?
Berberine HCl is the most common form – high purity, stable, and decent absorption. Here’s what to check:
Purity – Typically ≥97% or higher. Fewer impurities is better.
Color – Berberine HCl is a yellow crystalline powder. Too dark may mean impurities.
Heavy metals – Must be low (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury).
Solvent residues – Ethanol or other solvents used in extraction – residues must be tested.
Particle size – Choose mesh size based on your final dosage form (fine powder for capsules/tablets).
We supply berberine HCl powder with purity ≥97% (higher available), plant-derived. Every batch is tested for content, heavy metals, solvent residues, and microbes.
Typical dosage reference
| Product Type | Recommended Daily Dosage | Notes |
| Blood sugar support capsules/tablets | 900–1500 mg (split into 2–3 doses) | 500 mg per dose, with or before meals |
| Lipid support formulas | 500–1000 mg | Often with red yeast rice, plant sterols |
| Weight management products | 500–1000 mg | With Garcinia, green tea, L-carnitine |
| Gut health support | 500 mg | For mild intestinal issues, diarrhea |
| Comprehensive metabolic blends | 500–1000 mg | With cinnamon, chromium, mulberry leaf, white kidney bean |
4.OEM & Wholesale Services We Offer
We supply berberine raw material and also do contract manufacturing. If you want to launch a blood sugar, lipid, or weight management product, we can help.
Common synergistic blends:
Cinnamon and chromium are widely used in natural blood sugar management formulations and pair well with berberine.
Red yeast rice and CoQ10 support healthy lipid metabolism and cardiovascular wellness (red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin compounds).
Milk thistle complements berberine in liver health and fatty liver support formulas.
Turmeric and black pepper extract provide additional anti-inflammatory benefits while supporting metabolic health.
What we deliver:
COA for every batch, purity ≥97%.
Low heavy metals, low solvent residues.
Third-party test reports available.
Documentation for supplement filings.

5.Market Snapshot: Who‘s Buying It?
Berberine is growing fast in the global metabolic health market. Especially in North America and Europe, many people take it as a “natural metformin.”
Regional breakdown:
North America – Increasingly common in blood sugar and lipid products. Consumer awareness is rising.
Europe – Growing, but regulations on health claims are stricter.
Asia-Pacific – China is the origin country, so people know Huang Lian Su, but its use for metabolic support is still spreading.
Trend: Berberine’s low bioavailability has led some manufacturers to develop liposomal, nanoparticle, or phytosome technologies. Also, multi-ingredient formulas (blends) are more popular than single ingredient.

7.FAQs
Q1: Is berberine a prescription drug?
In China, berberine tablets are an OTC (non-prescription) drug for diarrhea. But in the US and Europe, it‘s sold as a dietary supplement. Important note: its effects are strong. If you’re already on blood sugar or blood pressure meds, check with your doctor first.
Q2: What‘s the difference between berberine and metformin?
Both activate AMPK and lower blood sugar. Metformin is a prescription drug – stronger, with more clinical data. Berberine is a natural compound – gentler, but may be better for blood lipids. Some people use them together, but only with a doctor’s approval.
Q3: How much should I take per day?
Typical dose: 500 mg, 2–3 times a day (total 1500 mg). Start low (e.g., 500 mg/day) and gradually increase to reduce stomach upset.
Q4: Are there side effects?
Common side effects: stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea – especially in the first few weeks. Taking with food helps. Rarely, constipation or headache. Very high doses may affect liver function (rare).
Q5: Can berberine be taken with other supplements?
Yes, but be careful with other blood sugar- or blood pressure-lowering ingredients – stacking could cause hypoglycemia or low blood pressure. Common pairings: cinnamon, chromium, milk thistle, turmeric.
Q6: Do you offer higher purity berberine (≥98%)?
Yes. We can supply ≥98% or higher for high-end formulations. MOQ available on request.
