1.What Is Banaba Leaf? And What Is Corosolic Acid?
Banaba is a plant native to Southeast Asia and the Philippines. The leaves have been used in traditional medicine for a long time – mainly to help with blood sugar control. It looks a bit like crape myrtle (they‘re related).
Banaba leaf contains several active compounds. The one that gets the most attention is corosolic acid. It’s a pentacyclic triterpenoid, structurally similar to ursolic acid. The natural content of corosolic acid in banaba leaves isn‘t very high, so extracts need to be concentrated to reach effective levels. Common specs on the market are 1%, 2%, 10%, and even 20% corosolic acid.
In dietary supplements, banaba leaf extract is mainly used for: helping maintain normal blood sugar levels (especially post-meal), supporting insulin sensitivity, and as part of weight management formulas (because it may affect sugar absorption and fat metabolism).
Compared to other blood sugar-supporting botanicals, corosolic acid doesn’t have a ton of research, but the few small human trials that exist show it does something, and it‘s fairly safe. It’s not a diabetes drug and can‘t replace metformin or insulin, but it works well as a daily supportive ingredient.

2.How Does It Work?
Corosolic acid’s main mechanism involves a protein called GLUT4 (glucose transporter type 4). In simple terms, it helps cells pull more glucose out of the blood, especially in muscle and fat cells. The effect is somewhat similar to insulin, but the pathway isn‘t exactly the same.
Key benefits supported by research:
Promotes glucose uptake – Corosolic acid activates GLUT4 translocation to the cell membrane, making cells more efficient at taking in blood glucose.
Inhibits alpha-glucosidase – Similar to white kidney bean and mulberry leaf extracts, it slows down the breakdown of carbs into glucose, which helps flatten post-meal blood sugar spikes.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant – Banaba leaf also contains other polyphenols that add extra benefits.
To be honest: The human studies are small – typically a few dozen people, taking 10–50 mg of corosolic acid per day (which equals a few hundred milligrams of extract) for a few weeks. Results show modest reductions in post-meal and fasting blood sugar. Some people respond well; others don‘t notice much. It’s not a “eat whatever you want” pass – you still need to watch your diet.
3.What to Look for When Buying Corosolic Acid Extract?
The raw material is banaba leaf. Purity specs vary a lot, and prices vary even more.
Key things to check:
Corosolic acid content – Common specs: 1%, 2%, 10%, 20%. Higher is stronger but also much more expensive. For general supplements, 1–2% is fine. High purity is for pharmaceutical-grade or low-dose formulas.
Extraction method – Water-ethanol extraction is common. Check solvent residues.
Batch consistency – Natural extracts vary. Good suppliers keep variation within reasonable limits.
Heavy metals and pesticides – Must meet limits.
Solubility – Corosolic acid doesn‘t dissolve in water. If you’re making drink mixes, you‘ll need special handling (microencapsulation or nanoparticle dispersion).
We supply banaba leaf extract standardized to 1%, 2%, 10%, or 20% corosolic acid (HPLC tested). Every batch is tested for content, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbes.
Typical dosage reference
| Product Type | Recommended Daily Corosolic Acid | Notes |
| Blood sugar support capsules/tablets | 10–20 mg | Often with cinnamon, chromium, mulberry leaf, bitter melon |
| Weight management formulas | 10–15 mg | With green tea, Garcinia, white kidney bean |
| Post-meal support drink sticks | 10–20 mg | Take with meals |
| High-purity pharmaceutical grade | 20–50 mg | Doctor supervision needed |
| Functional beverages (trace amounts) | 5–10 mg | Solubility issues need to be addressed |

4.OEM & Wholesale Services We Offer
We supply banaba leaf extract raw material and also do contract manufacturing. If you want to launch a blood sugar support or weight management product, we can help.
Common synergistic blends:
Cinnamon extract and chromium are commonly combined in classic natural blood sugar support stacks.
Mulberry leaf extract (DNJ) and banaba leaf both help inhibit alpha-glucosidase and may work synergistically.
White kidney bean, garcinia, and banaba leaf are often used together in carb-blocking and glucose management formulas.
Bitter melon and fenugreek are traditional herbs frequently included in blood sugar support blends.
What we deliver:
COA for every batch, corosolic acid content by HPLC.
Traceable sourcing.
Low heavy metals, low pesticide residues.
Documentation for supplement filings.
5.Market Snapshot: Who‘s Buying It?
Banaba leaf extract is a “second-tier” ingredient in the global blood sugar management market. Cinnamon, chromium, and mulberry leaf are bigger, but corosolic acid has a unique mechanism and appeals to more knowledgeable consumers.
Regional breakdown:
North America – Common in natural products for diabetes and prediabetes support, especially post-meal blood sugar products.
Europe – Less common than in North America, but present in health food stores.
Asia-Pacific – Used more in Japan and the Philippines, partly because it’s native to the region.
Trend: Demand for natural blood sugar support ingredients is growing overall, because the prediabetes population is increasing, and many people want to delay medications. Corosolic acid, as a more unique ingredient, gets attention from certain niche consumers.

7.FAQs
Q1: What’s the difference between corosolic acid and insulin?
Insulin is a prescription hormone with strong blood-sugar-lowering effects, but it needs to be injected. Corosolic acid is a natural plant compound with much milder effects. It cannot replace insulin. People with type 1 diabetes should not use it as a substitute for medical treatment.
Q2: Does corosolic acid really help with post-meal blood sugar?
A few small human studies suggest yes. Typically, taking 10–20 mg of corosolic acid before or with a high-carb meal can reduce the post-meal blood sugar spike. But results vary – not everyone responds.
Q3: How much should I take per day?
Generally, 10–20 mg of corosolic acid per day. For a 2% extract, that’s 500–1000 mg of extract. Start with a lower dose.
Q4: Are there side effects?
Most people tolerate it well. High doses may cause mild stomach upset or low blood sugar (especially if taken with diabetes medications). Take with meals to reduce risk. If you‘re on diabetes drugs, monitor your blood sugar.
Q5: Can corosolic acid help with weight loss?
Indirectly, yes – by affecting sugar absorption and insulin secretion, it may help with appetite and fat storage. But it’s not a “lose weight without trying” ingredient. Many weight management products include it because stable blood sugar helps reduce cravings.
Q6: Do you offer water-soluble corosolic acid?
Corosolic acid itself is not water-soluble. For liquid beverages, we can provide microencapsulated or cyclodextrin-complexed water-dispersible versions. MOQ available on request.
